I have been working hard trying to keep my scraps in control. The more projects we work on and finish, the more scraps we’ll end up with. Today I’m updating a little start to my scrappy ocean wave quilt.

Scrap fabrics are like rabbits, they do multiply FAST! Wouldn’t you agree?

I mentioned last time in my previous post HERE that I like to use the scraps right away after a project as much as I can before I get bored with them. Mainly because these are already piles of scraps that are perfectly coordinated and can easily match the quilts I just finished.

Here’s a recent scrap project that I made right after I finished the quilt. It is great cause you get a coordinated smaller project to match your quilt!

But once I’m bored and not inspired to work with the fabric anymore, I put them in another pile with other scraps from other projects. These will be run through my Accuquilt and cut into certain shapes.

You can read more about that HERE>

Cutting scrap fabrics into ready-to-use size

I have previously cut them into various sizes, but now I tend to keep the basics that I will most likely use.

That would be 5″ square and 2.5″ square and triangles!

It is so easy to cut triangles for half-square triangles using the Accuquilt Go! It even cut the dog ears off.

These are the ones that I turned into the Ocean Wave Quilt Block!

Ocean Wave Quilt Block

These were some of the half-square triangles that I cut using the half-square triangle die I got with my Accuquilt starter kit.

I pieced the triangles together into half-square triangles units. Then, I attach 4 squares to the corners to make the Ocean Wave Quilt Block.

Someday I hope to have a full quilt like the one HERE I saw on Chase’s blogs.

Here are my first 5 blocks together. I will need 144 blocks to make a 96″ square quilt.

I am so happy that although they’re totally weird colours together, they actually looks good all together from far.

that is the beauty of a scrap quilt!

These are 8″ blocks finished. The half-square triangles are 2.5″ square and I use 4 pieces of 2.5″ light squares for each block.

What to make with small pieces of Scrap Fabrics?

While most of the larger ones, I cut into squares and HSTs, the rest of the pieces that are either too small to be of any cut size will be separated into strings and tiny bits and bobs.

I use the tiny bits and bobs for paper piecing. Like this project, I made HERE. It is a wonderful way to use up scraps.

There’s a link to get the free printable paper piecing paper for this pineapple block on that post, so check it out HERE.

As for strings, they can also be used for paper piecing like for tiny log cabin blocks that I made HERE.

Is Scrappy Quilt Worth making?

There are so many ideas that come to my mind when it comes to scraps. But let me be honest, I do think that it takes more time to make a quilt using scraps. You’d have to stop and think about how to make things fit and work.

What I like to do is be scrappy but intentional scrappy, meaning that I’ll still put some thought into how the pieces will look against each other and avoid some repetitive pieces together.

And because I tend to be a little impatient with making big scrappy quilts, I tend to like smaller projects like the mini quilt and the pillows.

But I do love the look of big scrappy quilts on the bed. So, I am going to try and tackle it bit by bit by making one or two blocks here and there. Until it is enough to make a whole bed quilt.

And since I like working on several projects at once, I am also not going to limit myself to one type of scrappy block.

I am just going to do whatever I feel like doing at that moment and just simply enjoy it. No pressure, just purely enjoying some time with my scraps.

The JOY of making is definitely worth the time making it.

Just take it slow and enjoy it a little more.

And they’re practically free materials already. Just stretching the use of these fabrics is definitely worth it!

Hence, the progress on my Ocean Quilt Block! Someday, it will be a bed-size quilt.

Slowly but surely.

Tell me in the comment below, what is your favourite scrappy project or How do you use up your scraps?

Till next week when I’ll update my scrappy project again. I’m hoping to post every Saturday and call it my Scrappy Saturday. Have a lovely time quilting!

  1. I love scraps! I trim them up (or use my Accuquilt) and organize them in bins by color. When inspiration hits me, I’ll take some and match them up by color family or design, or whatever I feel and stitch them together to make hot pads, bowl cozies, potholders, kitchen appliance covers, pet beds and more. They’re always colorful and fun!
I really like the ocean wave quilt. The whites and neutrals balance it nicely.
