I have been working with scraps lately and while working with some tiny bits and bobs of scraps, my head was thinking about making a crumb quilt.

So while I’m dreaming about this crumb quilts of mine, I thought I’ll share some ideas on how you can make crumb quilts using up your teeny little itty bitty scraps!

What is a crumb quilt?

A crumb quilt is basically quilt made of the tiny scraps pieced together into blocks. It can be a full-blown crumb quilts made with absolutely just tiny scraps like the photo below made by Amanda Jean of the Crazy Mom Quilt or it can also be blocks made of crumbs and arranged to provide some place to rest the eyes.

Amanda called this quilt, the Scrap Vortex which is the perfect name for it.

I love that the scraps are somehow balanced across the whole quilt with the pop of reds here and there.

But I love the thought of having some control over my scrappy quilts, the one with some yardage put in to keep the scraps kind of contained and add an additional look to the overall quilt rather than totally made from scraps.

So, I went scouring around the web and put together some of these wonderful ideas that would be an inspiration to what I will be making with mine.

The Wedding Ring Crumb Quilt

Oh my goodness me, this is a dream! I have made a a double wedding ring quilt before and I ablsoutely love that quilt. You can read more about that wedding ring quilt HERE>

But this… is another level of goodness. It is just so creative to use up those scrappy panels into the arcs of the rings in this wedding ring quilt.

A unique idea and I love that it has a solid centre which keeps the design

Em of Aunt Em’s Quilt made this beautiful wedding ring quilts from her crumbs of scraps fabric. She also has patterns and other quilts made from the same technique.

Check out the quilt here and how she make the fabric panel in this post.

Crumb Quilt with a Frame and Sashing

I love the idea of framing those busy blocks with a tiny black frame. And then the embelishment was perfect. The choice of black and white is perfect to frame the colourful crumb quilts Carols of mamacjt blog‘s crumb quilt.

The painted cornerstone is also perfect for this quilt.

Shadow Crumb Quilt

Separating the busy blocks with a shadow is another perfect way to kind of let the crumb blocks stands out and yet not competing with the shadow blcok design. In fact it sort of frames it in a way that allows the blocks to be appreciated and let the eyes have some place to rest.

Here is the YouTube tutorial and a wonderful quilt made by Mark of the Quilting Marine. Just look at how wonderful the red background is and it is not competing with the busy crumb blocks.

I also think that the scrappy border is perfect for this quilt. It pulls the scrappiness from the blocks and just frame the quilt really well.

Here is another example of the shadow crumb quilt. This one was an image uploaded on pinterest HERE>

Modern Star Crumb Quilt

Here is another way to use the crumb blocks. I love that Katie used plain scrappy triangles instead of the crumbs as well. This is a perfect mix of larger scraps or scrappy charm squares with the crumbs of little bits and bobs of scraps.

You can read more about the making of this quilt HERE on Katie’s blog.

Seeing all this ideas, made me think of how I would want to make mine…

Definitely a block of some sort of pattern or stars. and I would love to mix in the usage of other scraps together with the crumb blocks.

Well, I am off to dreaming about the quilt and making those crumb blocks! I’ll share those soon. In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed the ideas here.

Let me know,

Have you made a crumb quilt before? if you haven’t are interested to make one too?

  3. A crumb quilt has been on my “one of these days” list for ages!
I really want to make one and have LOADS of scraps to do it with. So if I ever get around to it (sigh!) It will either be one like that with the black frames and white sashing – it’s absolutely gorgeous, or the shadow quilt with the red background from the Quilting Marine. They are both stunning!
