This was surely a fun project. Cutting onesies and shirts and making it into a quilt was surely different. I have never made a baby clothes quilt before, but I decided to take this custom quilt request as I wanted to challenge myself and learn new things along the way. Now, I rarely EVER take quilt orders, but this one was something that I could gain from too.

I knew that it wasn’t going to be hard as I have watched how to make a T-shirt quilt before. It was not much different working with the baby clothes other than having to deal with smaller pieces. I also appliquéd the socks and hat on the quilt for extra fun.

Overall, the project was a great success.

I recently handed over the quilt and it was received well by my customer and the little owner of the quilt.

I  filmed a lot while making this quilt in hope of turning it into a tutorial for you should you want to make one too. However, that will be coming in this upcoming new year as I still need to edit those recordings (not my best forte. I hate video editing process). Bear with me.

Anyway, as for now I hope you’ll enjoy browsing through this fun quilt photos!

Free Motion Quilting Loop De Loop

I quilted this one with a large loopy loop. I do love free motion quilting this design. Have you tried this design before? I teach this in Free Motion Quilting Bootcamp and while it is a simple motif, you can do lots of variation with it just by varying the spaces, the size of the loop and even change the loop into other fun shapes!

Isn’t that bear cute? And the pair of socks!

And that cloud…with the pair of mittens.

Some of the plain empty blocks that were mainly from the back of baby’s clothes were enhanced with hats and socks.

Appliqué Letters for custom name

To make it extra special and more customised, I cut appliqué letters using my Cricut Maker and made a panel with the receiver’s name on it. That was surely was a great success and a wonderful use of my Cricut Maker.

The backing was made form a light blue solid and a stripe of fun primary colour fabric I have in my stash. The colours match well with the stripes on one of the baby shirt quilt.

I always find ways to make use of what I already have in stash for the backing rather than buying specific backing fabrics. I just can’t bear using up all the fabrics for the backing.

That is why I made a post recently about the Creative way how to make quilt backing which you can check out here.

Finally the binding. Can never go wrong with a stripe binding. I am always stocking up on stripes fabrics. This is also the best time to stock up on fabrics since there’s lot of sale going around just before Christmas.

Did you check out the SALE on FQ shop? I just bought a couple of fat quarter bundles there on SALE!

They have amazing sale going on right now -> The 12 days of Christmas SALE. Make sure you check them out. I am just a big fan of the shop and I love that they offer flat rate shipping. Great for internationals like me.

Here is another shot of the baby clothes quilt all scrunched up and ready to be snuggled into!

I sent the quilt wrapped in a vinyl bag that I quick sewed together so that it has a boxy bottom. Tied it off with a leftover strip fabrics and voila. All looking quite professionally done.

I also made a sticker label with Baby Clothes Quilt for the receiver and printed it off at home using my colour printer that is refillable (and way cheaper).

Wrapping quilt as gifts

Well, I hope you are off to have a great day! I will let you know when the tutorial is going to be up. Just make sure you’re subscribed to TLMC newsletter and surely you won’t miss it then.

  1. That is a darling quilt and I love striped bindings too; they give quilts a little bit of “attitude”! I’ve been practicing the loop-de-loop design and really enjoying it, especially as it’s a design that works well on virtually any quilt. It’s a great design for those of us who are still learning to be comfortable with FMQ.
Thanks for all the lovely ideas you share with us.

  2. I have been planning to make a memory quilt like this for my son using many of his onesies and little t-shirts. He turns twelve this week and I have yet to start! Thanks for the inspiration to finally get on with it (and to practice my free motion skills)! I look forward to watching your video in the new year.

  3. What a darling quilt! When do the letters did you a fusible product or did you sew on to top of them after the fact to secure them?

  4. The Baby Clothes Quilt you made came out Beautiful! Fantastic Job Amira, Love it! What a way to finish up the year!

  5. This quilt is absolutely adorable and the way you added the hats, socks and mittens is precious. With the added name, it just makes it complete. Thank you for sharing.
