An almost complete quilt top to show today!
I am loving this finish so much, can’t wait to baste this quilt this weekend and start quilting it.
This is another post for the update on my Sewcialites Quilt. This is a FREE quilt along that has just ended but you are free to download the patterns even though the QAL has ended.
(The QAL began on Friday, September 25, 2020 and will be ending on Friday, July 2, 2021)
You can check out some of my previous posts on the blocks and some of the tips and things I learned as I made these blocks.
- The start of Sewcialites Quilt – trimming units down to get more accuracy
- Progress of the Sewcialites quilt #1 – pinning and notions to help with accuracy
- Progress of the Sewcialites quilt #2 – keeping up and catching up when you join a QAL

For this project,
Quilting Tools and Notions I used:
- My trusted workhorse, Janome Horizon Memory Craft QCP8200
- So Fine Thread for piecing
- My new favourite Navy Blue Rotary Cutter
- Large cutting Mat
- Wool ironing Mat (I have no issues with the smell, but sometimes it can burn if the iron is way too hot and no steam)
- Travelling steam iron (I love this Iron, so much easier to use small iron when pressing small units)
- Sets of Trimming Rulers (small rulers makes a difference when you need to trim small units)
- Mini Rotating Mat (mainly used to trim the units before piecing them together)
- Fabric is mainly Moda Fabric Little “Miss Sunshine” by Lella Boutique, background is a mix of what I have in my stash. (check out all the pretties from Lella Boutique’s newer collections HERE)
- The pattern is Sewcialites Quilt (FREE pattern and quilt along)
Sewcialites Quilt Top
Well, the quilt top still needs a border, but I had to take the photo while the weather is good and I have good lights!
I took this photo against our house that is currently in renovation but stalled due to the lockdown. A messy, rustic background makes the quilt pop out more don’t you think?
I love the final look of this quilt, I definitely had my doubt about the choice of fabrics with the limited palette choices. I also had a doubt with the different background fabrics which I scraped from my stash until I had no more of a similar tone..something cream-ish.
I did grab the whiter ones for a few of the blocks (the sewing machine and the on-point corner one) which I thought would definitely pop out. However, it wasn’t too bad. Otherwise, I had planned to redo those blocks.
I chose to do a scrappy half square triangle setting and changed the layout a tiny bit to make it more symmetrical.
Overall, this was a great successful quilt along and I learned so much!
Adding Borders
I still need to sort all the leftovers. I was thinking of extending the border with a scrappy piano key design, but then again, the quilt is already a whopping 81″ x 81″ after I put the first border on. That is is already the perfect size for a queen bed. Besides, I am already giddy to get this basted and quilted!
What do you think? Should I add the extra piano key border though?
Do you like Block Of the Months (BOM) or Quilt-along?
If you are working on one, let me know which one are you doing at the moment.
I absolutely love quilt-along as they help me make quilts little by little. The accountability and the joy of making together also keep me productive. Now that I have joined several quilt along, I do have some tips to share for a succesful quilt along. I’ll be sharing that in the upcoming blogpost.

Beautiful finish. I really like your setting with the large hst’s. Looking forward to see how you finish this . It’ll be amazing either way, with or without a border.
I do like BOMs, but don’t have any on the go at the moment, trying hard to finish off some tops waiting to be basted and quilted.
I love the quilt . I love the scrappy look. Makes me want to think a little about mixing up the background colors a bit. I am currently working on a BOM from a quilting life. It is half square triangles and they are tricky for me?
