More updates on the scrappy Ocean Wave Quilt! This quilt is a labor of time and love for sure, but little by little it is making progress. I am not working on it fully and that is what makes it fun. I can work on several project at a time and yet still have some progress.

I am making this Scrappy Quilt from the half-square triangles unit that I cut using the half-square triangle die I got with my Accuquilt starter kit.

This week, I even reorganize my sewing room this week to make sewing space for another machine up and running.

Here is my new setup for sewing up scraps. Whenever I have a couple of minutes break from chores or after dinner, I’ll come and sew a few seams.

I just let the chain continues. This machine does not have the automatic thread cutter like my other sewing machine has, so it’s best to just keep going and I just let the sewn pieces grow behind my machine until I am ready to press them flat.

I have two trays of cut pieces, one of low-volume fabrics to match with the deeper colors.

Cutting more scraps

I was running out of the low volume and white background. I guess those fabrics don’t land as much in my scrap pile. I needed more of those, so I went ahead and cut out more.

My cutting mat has seen better days. I will need to replace it soon, but I am just using it as much as I can before I get a new one.

The 6″ square mat is my most used one so far because most of the dies that come with the Accuquilt set I bought were the 6″ dies.

Replenished my tray of low volume fabrics and I’m ready to continue again anytime I have some bits of time.

Pairing values

When working with scraps, it is important that values of the fabric play a big role. Sometimes it’s hard when there are medium-value colors in the pile.

It can be both,

It can be a darker fabric when paired with a lighter value fabric or..

a low volume when paired with a darker fabric.

I like mine to have a good mix of these pieces too in the pile. They add more scrappiness character to the whole quilt.

However, I try not to have too many of these, as they can take away the pattern of the whole quilt.

You can spot some of these units in my current progress on the quilt wall.

Scrappy Ocean Wave Quilt Progress

I love how the blocks look together on the wall now! All the pop of yellows and teal. I work with a lot of yellows in my previous quilts, so my scraps will have the same fabrics popping in too.

One of the ways to love working with scraps is to have a good mix of your favorite fabrics too. Cut them up, mix it in with those fabrics you don’t like to use and you’ll find that the final look will be great! Good use of the “ugly fabric” and the leftovers of good fabrics.

Scrappy Quilt Ocean Wave Quilt-8

These are 8″ blocks finished. The half-square triangles are 2.5″ square and I use 4 pieces of 2.5″ light squares for each block.

I am planning to make a queen-size bed quilt with these, so there’s still a long way to go. But that’s okay, little by little and I am surely in no hurry!

You can easily make this blocks by making half square triangle (HST) units from your scraps. You don’t have to use the Accuquilt , you can easily make lots of HSTs using other methods like the paper piecing methods HERE>

I love your setup! Having both machines up would be more productive.
My scraps seem to get put away and not always are found to work with.
I have found some colourful batiks to make the McKenna Ryan’s “SnowBuds”!
They are slowly coming together and looking great!

  2. I love all of your creations you make using your scraps. The quilts are beautiful

  3. It was such a surprise to see your machine for this set up was a Lily! I bought mine as they were closing out that model. She has run many miles but now used only on occasion. I may have to find her a little spot for such projects as your Ocean Wave. I’m always looking for fun scrap busters I can sit and chain piece in between other projects. My third machine is a 70 year old Bernina Jubilee, a tough little “tank” of a machine which is wonderful for those fun days of sewing in the garden.
