I finished a fun project today—a new table runner! A few months ago, I mentioned this quilted table runner in my newsletter, along with another with a slightly different block layout. However, I hadn’t quilted it at that time. My goal was to create something with minimal colors to match my home decor. I love working with colors, but I also enjoy when a project blends perfectly with the home.

10 inch stack fabric

It all started with the beautiful “Green Field” fabric collection by Lisa Audit for Wilmington Prints. I bought the 10″ stack of this stunning cotton fabric, filled with various shades of green. I was lucky to get it for half the price at Missouri Star Quilt Co. They always have great daily deals, and fabric collections like this are hard to pass up! I also picked up a 5-yard mini bolt of green fabric from MSQC that matches the collection, along with a pattern to try.

Currently MSQC have many amazing Birthday Bash Deal, so make sure you come and check that out HERE>

Magic Carpet Layer Cake (10 inch stack) Friendly Quilt Pattern

I’ve been eager to try the Magic Carpet Quilt pattern ever since I watched the video tutorial. I’ll definitely make it again in more colors and larger quilts, but testing it with a smaller project like a table runner was perfect. Most quilt patterns can easily be adapted into smaller projects. I rarely find table runner patterns for block-based quilts, but simply making a few blocks is enough to create a runner. It’s a quick, satisfying project and prevents me from getting bored by repeating the same block over and over. I guess that’s just me—this is why I prefer sampler quilts for larger projects. Repetitive blocks tend to bore me.

For this table runner, I selected some light-colored fabrics from the collection and paired them with a darker background. There are also some beautiful navy blues in the collection, but I decided to stick to minimal colors for this project. I’ll save the rest of the fabric for future projects.

Quilting Tools and Notions I used:

After making the blocks, I followed the pattern layout but found it a little plain with the colors I chose. So, I experimented with the layout and ended up with two options: one with darker triangles in opposite directions and another with diamond-shaped darker triangles.

Borders and Basting

I added a simple border using the leftover strip pieces. Then I chose a light-colored backing fabric and went ahead with the basting. I always try to use leftover piece of batting for small projects. Spray basting is great for small quilts, but I haven’t bought any yet, so I pinned it instead. I love using colored pins because they’re easier to see while quilting.

Free Motion Quilting Double Loops

Next came the fun part—quilting! After custom quilting my last finished quilt (which I blogged about last week HERE), I was excited to try an all-over design. I chose a simple double-loop design. It was relaxing and took less than an hour to finish quilting the runner. I still have the other runner to finish, but it felt great to complete this one, including the binding. And of course, I didn’t forget the label! I sewed a smaller label into the binding, hiding the raw edges.

I machine bind from the back and top stitch from the front using a matching thread and a cream colored bobbin thread to match the backing fabric.

Stocking up Quilted Table Runner for gifts

This quilted table runner will be a gift. I’m collecting a few to give away to friends and family next year for them to decorate with.

Here it is on my dining table! Of course, I wouldn’t eat with the runner on the table, as we have many placemats that have already been sacrificed for that. LOL. Our family can never keep things clean. I have many quilts with love-filled stains, but not all need to be like that!

Future Project with Magic Carpet Quilt Pattern

Since I still feel like I need to remake this pattern with more colors, I’ll try and make one with the Strawberry Lemonade Collection by Sherri and Chelsea. I just love the vibrant colors in this collection. You can still find this collection in the store like Missouri Star Quilt Co or Fat Quarter Shop as they have just reprinted the collection.

That’s a lovely table runner! Love the colors and you did a fantastic job on it!

I covered all my wool mats with homemade, matching quilt fabric “pillowcases”. That way my wool mats don’t get dirty, the cases might but not the mats themselves. The cases can just be tossed in the wash or a new one made in less than half an hour.

I love that Idea of wrapping the wool mat! Might just have to do that too. I’m thinking of getting a large one as well as I really love the wool mat!

I just got a larger mat and have it by my sewing machine – absolutely LOVE having one right beside my machine that’s big enough to handle fat quarters.

  2. Beautiful table runner and you did a fantastic job!
I enjoy your emails and projects although I am not an avid quilter. Right now just sewing quilt tops together for volunteer Project Linus quilts here in the US.
    Take care!

Thank you Christie! Sewing together for charity is surely a lot of fun while doing good. Best of both world.
