There’s something so special about seeing a quilt come to life piece by piece. And this time, I have stripy sashing to bring it all together!  I’m thrilled to share that I’ve made more progress on my pastel basket quilt which I posted about last week here, and it’s finally at the flimsy stage! I do still need to put the border on, but I’m pretty sure I’ll start quilting it soon!

The soft, delicate tones I pulled from my fat quarter stash are just as dreamy as I hoped, and seeing them all together brings me so much joy. But let’s be honest—putting together the blocks is my least favorite part of quilting. When all the blocks are sewn into rows, and I’m finally assembling them into one big piece, it’s a mix of excitement and dread. The flimsy feels so heavy and fragile at this stage, and I’m always nervous about handling it too much. It’s not exactly my idea of fun! But once it’s done and up on the wall, I’m reminded why I push through this step. The big picture starts to come together, and it’s worth every moment of awkward maneuvering.

When putting row together, it is time to use pins!! I rarely use pins, but I never miss it when putting rows together. I love this super sharp pins – highly recommend it. Makes such a difference to work with sharp pins. It glides so easily and I just love using these pins.

Stripy Sashing

By this stage, one of my favorite details of this quilt is the stripy sashing. It adds such a playful touch to the soft tones and gives the whole quilt a little extra personality. And the best part? This project has been a total stash-buster for me! Every single piece—from the blocks to the sashing and even the border—came straight from my stash. I’ve been pretty mindful about my fabric collecting habits over the past few years, focusing on picking up sale yardage that complements my stash or precuts. I love collecting simple fabrics like dots, and stripes.

I fell in love with the quilt in the book Summer Memories Book by Susan Ache because the stripy sashing! Was so happy I got to make something similar too.

Yardage Sale – Buying Stash that matches

If you’re like me and love finding good deals, I highly recommend checking out the sale bin HERE > . It’s a great way to stock up on versatile fabrics that will blend beautifully with what you already have. Some of my favorite finds came from sales like these, and they’re what make projects like this possible.

Now that the flimsy is done, I’m turning my attention to the border. It’s another fabric I had tucked away, and I love how it’s also another low volume, which will add a soft, finished frame to the quilt. I am still thinking whether I wanted to add in a second border or make the peach alphabet fabric as the binding. There’s something so satisfying about pulling from your stash and watching it all come together brings so much joy.

Tell me about your current project.

How about you? Are you working on any stash-busting projects or piecing together a flimsy of your own? I’d love to hear how your quilting journey is going. And if you’ve got any tips for handling the heavy, fragile flimsy stage, I’m all ears!

Thanks for following along with my progress. Quilting is such a joy, especially when we can share the journey together. Stay tuned for the next steps—I can’t wait to show you how this quilt turns out!

I started the quilt last summer together with a quilt along celebrating the Summer Memories Book by Susan Ache.  You can check out #summermemoriesqal to join along or to enjoy all the other versions. The book is an eye-candy filled with great projects and is sure to inspire you to pick up some red and blue fabrics to get started. I knew I did! But what really caught my eye was the basket quilt.

I think the stripy sashing just brings it all together don’t you think?

  1. Your little baskets are cute and the striped sashing is great. 🙂

  2. Your use of stripes to border the blocks is really great, I’m going to use that idea!

  3. Your quilt looks great! Love the fun striped sashing. My goal this year is to work on UFOs. Another goal is not to buy ‘unnecessary’ fabric, only fabric I need to finish UFOs, and even better if I can find it on sale. So far, so good!

  4. Love the stripes, they really make the quilt. I would like to actually do some projects instead of just loving everyone else’s!

Your “blind” stitching isn’t quite blind. I was taught to do it with a small stitch on the upper of the lower fabric, and then a small stitch on the lower side of the upper fabric, all just fractionally underneath the edge of the join. ie bringing the needle out between the two layers instead of through the top. It leaves a tiny amount not stitched right down, but is truly invisible.

  6. Amira, this is a gorgeous quilt. I love the striped sashing and the colors and overall look of this quilt. Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings. Have a great week!

    • Beautiful quilt in lovely soft colors, the striped border is perfect. I’d definitely use the peach for a narrow inner border, then the print fabric in a wider border.

  7. Your quilt is beautiful with the soft fabrics and the striped sashing is perfect. Thank you for linking up to Put your foot down.
