Progress update and a little note on the making of the bed size quilts.

While I love making small projects for the quick feeling of accomplishment and the fun joy it brings, in the end, the most satisfying quilted items to use is the big old bed size quilts.

To me, it just make sense to make a bed size quilts rather than small ones if I was were to think about the practicality of things.

How about you?

I mean, when we make something, we always have in mind why we’re making it right?

If it is just purely for the joy of making, I really don’t think much of how big the quilts is gonna turn out. I am simply having fun making.

An odd size quilt up here: my Sewcial Bee sampler. But I did enjoy making and learning from this a lot!

I have made many odd size quilts around the house that really does not get used as often. Either it was too big for displaying here and there or too little to be used on the bed.

Too many quilts?

Lately, I think I have way too many quilts already around the house.

But I still want to keep on making. So, I have been putting in a lot more thoughts into the making. I’ll try to keep on making bed size quilts as those make perfect sense to non-quilters. I am planning to gift them out to family and friends who are of non -quilters, and would surely prefer bed quilts.

I am also going to continue making smaller quilted items too, hot pads, table toppers or placemats for fun and the joy of making. These also make sense when it comes to gifting it to non-quilters.

Other sizes are just a little bit odd and it will be not practical enough to gift away and I’ll end up having way too many in my quilt cabinet stored away.

Which is sad for me, as I love seeing it around the home often. Especially on the bed.

I just find simple joy in making the beds with handmade quilts on top.

Do you too?

The struggle with making bed size quilts

or large quilts in general..

I don’t mind the making of the blocks as that is just an additional repeat of making blocks. Those are usually fun, unless you are making a difficult block.

However, when it comes to piecing the rows and having to get it all together, the large piece of quilt top can be hard to work with. It is just a lot of bulk to get hold on too.

Here is my recent quilt top finish: Together Quilt

And large quilt tops in progress take up space!

That is what I am going through at the moment.

My work in progress pile is a little big right now with all these large quilt tops.

So, my aim is to get all of this completed this year and I already have in mind to gift 3 of these away.

I have few to finally quilt it. I am going for an allover quilting for most of them except for the Aviatrix Medallion in which I am custom quilting it.

  1. Sweet home quilt is the one I would like to follow,Thank you Rose

  2. Beautiful quilts each and every one! I think I would work on the 100 Days Block Quilt first. I love making quilt blocks and I love the quilting but the part I don’t like is putting the three layers together on a big quilt. So much work and I struggle to find the space to lay them out! Now than I’m older I find myself making smaller quilts and other projects. I love having seasonal quilts to put on the sofa, often with pillows to match. Good luck and enjoy the process of finishing those beautiful quilts.

Love the bright colours in the 100 days block quilt ……. I pick it!
You do a great job of the baby and medium size quilts! Have fun…. Look forward to seeing your choice!

  4. The 100 Days Block Quilt is beautiful, bright, and ready for this time of year. I would either pick the 100 Days Block Quilt of the Home Sweet Home. They are all beautiful! I have 5 quilts right now to take to Topstitchery where I rent their longarm machine and I topquilt them myself. It all takes time, but the joy comes when you can see your finished quilts. Happy Quilting! .

  5. 100 days quilt. It is bright and happy. All would be fun though.

  6. Beautiful quilts. I would either pick Sweet Home or 100 Days Block Quilt. Have fun. I love making big quilts, but most of what I do are smaller items.

    • All the quilts tops are beautiful! If you’re planning on giving one of these as a gift, I would choose the together quilt. I like to think of you or what the quilt will be used for. It helps me decide on the quilting pattern.

Do the most difficult one first – it will be out of the way and the other ones will be that much more enjoyable in comparison. 🙂

    They are all beautifully done.

  8. I too vote for the 100 days quilt. Would love to see what you do with the Aviatrix Medallion, I’m working on a medallion quilt with a long way to go yet, but trying to think already of how I can quilt it when the time comes.

  9. Sweet Home or Sewcialites would be my top two choices. i just like the look of t he finished tops.

I like them all! Pick the one that u like the most at the moment…the one that speaks to you! I break my big quilts into quarters and do a quilt as you go method to make them more manageable on my machine. Something for you to try maybe.

  11. 100 days definitely. Thank you for inspiring me to be brave and actually quilting my own quilts.

I think the 100 days looks like fun…and you can quilt blocks seperately or an all over design…..

  13. I like all your quilts
I would start with the together quilt. But if I were you I would do your favourite. It would give you the most pleasure.

  14. Sweet Home is my favorite. Of course all your quilts are beautiful Amira. Thank you for all your tips.

They are all beautiful. I like 100 days and sweet life. I like the colors and I also like stars!

Ohh, Amira! I love your quilt tops! I believe I like the sweet home quilt for you to do first. Would love seeing your process on it.

  17. Love how your Socialites quilt came out on the bed. I love bed quilts, also, on my beds. I have one sandwiched now that needs completed so that I can use it on my bed. I really want to get rid of any bedspread that I did not make myself. Your tops are all very nice. I especially like the 100 days blocks because it is just fun!

  18. Like our good friend Karen always says…..”eat the frog first”. Do the one you are least looking forward to, that way it will be out of the way that much sooner and you can move on to the ones you look forward to. No one mentioned the Sweet Life quilt. I really like that one. The large blocks make a perfect canvas for custom quilting motifs. All are beautiful, but that one is my favourite.

  19. For me, the most useful to see would be Sweet Life, because of the sashings and the large blocks with larger spaces to quilt, which would be instructive to see how you do the different areas.

  20. I vote for the 100 Block quilt to be done first, followed by the Large Blocks quilt, and the the Houses quilt.

I think the “sweet life” quilt would be fun to quilt.
