Another fun quilt along that I’m updating today. This one will be a combination of big quilt blocks and small ones, so it’s definitely a fun one.
This fun quilt along is hosted by Fat Quarter Shop using the book Simply Half Yards, but with a FREE new layout. The setting is beautiful and I can never get enough star blocks, so it was an easy YES for me to join the quilt along.
The quilt-along is called Simply Stars Quilt Along
Simply Stars Quilt finishes at 64.5″ Square,
The quilt along begins 16th November – 21st December 2022!
There’s still time to grab all the things you need for the quilt along.
and the Fabric Requirements and all the extra tools and notions HERE>
I’ll be using Moda Birdsong Collection by Gingiber for this quilt along.
This collection is bursting with rich colors and beautiful illustrations!

The little bird feet tone-on-tone is so cute!
Week 2-4: Little Stars to a Gigantic star centre block
I haven’t updated since week 2,
but week 2 we made 16 little stars which took quite a while, but I had fun being so organise with all the chain piecing.

on week 3 we continued with another star border from the Simply Half Yard Book. There’s so many great star blocks in this book!
You can check out some of the quilts in the Simply Half-Yards Quilt Book in my previous post HERE>
and this week, we made the gigantic centre block!
The block is 24.5″ square. A pretty large quilt block for sure!
I love that if we were to make a full size quilt from this, we can just make 9 large quilt blocks and a little bit of sashing and we’re done.
Perfect to showcase beautiful fabrics you have in your stash!
Large quilt blocks makes a great centrepiece too.
We’re almost at the end. This coming Wednesday we’ll be putting it all together into the medallion quilt as per layout given in the sew along.
Design Wall
Here are all the blocks on my flimsy design wall. I really need to put this batting on a board so they stay better on the wall but just haven’t had the time yet.
There’s a set of boards that are ready to use as well like this one which can be a great option if you’re not up for some DIY.
Or if you don’t mind the flimsy bit, the Fon’s and Porter grid wall is a great option too.
I love being able to put the blocks on the wall to take a good look at the layout before putting them together, so I highly recommend having a design wall if you have the space for it.
Quilting Tools and Notions I used:
- My trusted workhorse, Janome Horizon Memory Craft QCP8200
- I used Superior Thread Snow for piecing this quilt
- My favourite Ergonomic Rotary Cutter – this have saved my wrist a lot!
- Large cutting Mat
- Wool ironing Mat (I have no issues with the smell, but sometimes it can burn if the iron is way too hot and no steam)
- Oliso Pro Iron (I love this Iron, it lifts as you let go, saving the wrist from too much work and it gives a good heat and steam)
- Portable Design Board
- Quilter’s Clapper
- Wooden Seam Roller

If you are into quilt alongs, there’s also Sewcialites QAL to join at the moment! Don’t forget to check that FREE Quilt Along too.

What a great idea! Start with a beautiful big block in the center! I have a temporary design wall I use a plastic kitchen tablecloth and use the backside that’s soft. It’s nice if you need something temporary. I hang it over a closet wall and close the door and it’s up!
