Have you ever tried paper piecing flying geese unit? While there are many ways to make flying geese units, Ive never tried paper piecing it. I’ve tried a couple of different ways, but what usually hampers me is the need to find the correct size to cut and also make it so that I am able to trim it a little as I find it hard to not get a wonky blocks once I’m done sewing. So, I like patterns that allow  me to trim the final unit.

But for this particular project, I decided to make the flying geese units using the paper pads from Fat Quarter Shop and I have to say I am loving it!

Well, you can go ahead and check out the choices over HERE>. But basically you can be as free as you want with your own choice of colour! You can even make it in other colours and make it not Halloween-ish! The pattern is so versatile for any colours for sure.

As for me, I’ll be using this bundle of goodness with a little hint of purple I picked to match the bundle. The bundle I’m using is called Pumpkin Licorice by Andover Fabric. You can find the bundle HERE> if it is still available. It’s the perfect blend of blacks and orange! I can’t wait to see this quilt come together.

But here are other options that you might be interest in too!

Week 2-3 Progress

I’ve decided to make 12 main blocks and turn it into a table runner! I made the first block for a test run and then I cut all the pieces need and went ahead with the streamline process of stitching all the piece with the paper pads and piecing the units together into blocks.

There are tiny units in this block, the small cornerstone in between the little black bars are 1″ square!

I decided to make all the units that can be paper pieced with the paper piecing pads from It’s Sew Emma. I absolutely love the process as I can roughly cut the pieces and mindlessly stitch on the papers and batch trim them all later.

The technique does make a perfectly sharp units. The units are perfectly sized making it so easy to piece the little tiny units together into blocks. flying geese using foundation paper

I’d say definitely worth the papers when dealing with small units like the one we had to make in this quilt. The flying geese are 2 x 3.5″ unfinished which is pretty small for me.

You can watch my process of making the flying geese unit from the video I posted over on Instagram below:

I am loving the blocks so far and really am enjoying making the blocks despite of the small pieces. I thought it was going to be more challenging when I saw the blocks with those tiny black strips. But it is not! The seams also nested so well.
