Another update on my slow work in progress, the Grandmother’s flower garden.

Every time I pick up this project, I would span it out and adore it. Please don’t mind me as I admire the progress of this project. Not that my stitches are perfect, but just admiring how the flowers are blooming one over another, hexagon by hexagons. Little stitches at a time.

I am also seeing some flaws here and there, seeing my work progress over the years. Yes YEARS. this has been a 6 year project in progress.

My first post of this project was back here in this post where I share the free printable quotes. The post dated back in 2017. Well, I will try and make it a less than 10-year project, but we’ll see. I love working on the project, it is just that I am always torn with tons of things to do while watching TV, like laundries and other hand projects like cross-stitching. But we’ll see and I’ll try to work on it a little more in the last quarter of this year and maybe at least I’ll get all the diamonds and flowers done before moving onto the 530 hexagons for the background.

I’m still sticking to the whip stitch as that is the most comfortable one for me. It stitch up faster too. It may not be invisible but can I say that I love the little tiny stitches popping through here and there too. Just the beauty of hand-stitching work.

You can find out how to do the EPP stitches in this post of various stitches for EPP.

Fabrics & Pattern Details

The pattern is the Grandmother’s flower garden from the book “Handful of Scraps” by Edyta Sitar.

The fabrics is mostly from an old collection of Bonnie and Camille called the Simple Abundance. I recently added in a few more piece from various Civil War Reproduction fabrics that seems to match as I’m running out of the original fabric. I am falling in love with these colour palette and I find myself collecting more of these fabrics.

As of today, my stats for this quilt is:

28 of 32 hexagon flowers and 4 of 6 centre diamonds done.

Collecting cream background fabrics

I am in the process of collecting some background fabrics – some of those from the civil war reproduction collections seems to match well, and I’m just collecting some of those on sale since it’ll be a while before I do get to it anyway.

Speaking of sale, don’t miss out on the Labor Day Weekend SALE of at FQS >> Lots of fabrics on sale. Come check it out.

Keeping WIPs in project bags

While I do love making the vinyl front project bags, quilt projects calls for larger project bags, and I just love these It’s Sew Emma Mad for Plaid Project Bags! They’re big enough to fit lots of fabrics and they have boxy bottom so that it’ll stand up when you put it up. These are so durable and comes in many colours too. Just love it! FQS sent me these new colors and I’m already planning for some fall quilt projects to start and keep in them!

And here’s a quilt that I’m planning to finish off (it was my sister’s Unfinished Object) already in its project bag ready to get some progress! The background fabric she chose was putting me off, but a finish is better than not. So I’m strapping up to get this done and gifting it back to her soon!

What are your FALL projects this year? Tell me in the comment below!

  1. I wanted to make the Grandmother’s Garden quilt. I haven’t been able to find the book by Edyta Sitar anywhere. Can you suggest a pattern that is similar?

I also have a long time hand project. Mine is a bedside yo yo quilt in pastel scraps. Been working on it at least 5 years. I really like the look of yo yos.

  2. The quilt will be absolutely beautiful! I too love the color combinations. Can’t wait to see when you have it all finished!
