FMQ for Beginners Mini-Course Day 2, Lesson 1: Tools & Prep
Hi there,
In order to get started with free motion quilting, we’d have to settle on the tools required and make some quilt sample sandwiches.
If you haven’t got your free motion quilting foot for your machine just yet, please check out this post and get one that’ll suit your machine.
I will be showing you how to prep quilt sandwiches to practice on and also teach you how to properly install the free motion quilting foot on your machine.
The needles, thread choices, and some other tools mentioned in the video are linked in this page here.

Tasks for today’s lesson:
- Watch today’s video and read this post here.
- Clean lint off your sewing machine
- Change the needle
- Thread/Re-thread you machine
- Install the free motion quilting foot
- Lower the feed-dog
- Make a couple of bobbin threads
- Make a couple of quilt sandwiches (I suggest 5 of 10 x 10″ square)

That will take about 10-20 minutes, right? 🙂
Remember, it is the progress that matters.
This prep session will get you ready to start right away tomorrow. Keep a clean area too, just to make it more inviting for you to start.
So make sure you don’t skip it.
Till then, I’ll see you in the next lesson!
