I am strip piecing the sashing for my Together quilt and found a couple of things that make things more organized that I would like to share with you in this post. Anything that makes patchwork easy is always good to know. So in this post, I have a video of me sewing the cornerstone post for this quilt, and while at it, I share some tips for easy patchwork using the strip piecing technique.

Strip Piecing Nine Patches

Stripology Ruler helps make strip piecing a breeze. I highly recommend this ruler. A little pricey for the large one, but so easy to use. And I can’t tell you how often I am so glad I have this ruler and how it has helped in making tons of scrips in a matter of minutes and without the hassle of moving the rulers and the fabrics for each cut.

You can check out Stripology Ruler here or here on Amazon

Other than the Stripology Ruler, here are some other tips that can make the patchwork process more efficient:

  • chain piecing
  • batch press
  • use a clapper to help get those seams flat
  • use a portable design board to stack up the pieces and carry them easily next to your sewing machine

Current Progress:

I am now piecing the rows together. I am loving how it looks so far. The sashing is really popping out and the highlight of this quilt. It takes the quilt blocks to another level! I rarely make pieced sashing, and I thought this was a great pattern to try out.

However, I do say that this is not a beginner quilt. There were so many seams to match especially those sashing. Well, always great to learn through experience.

If you are interested to make the quilt, you can check out the Pattern, Together Quilt here.

I hung this batting up when I wanted to see how the blocks and the sashing look as a quilt. Well it didn’t work so well because it wasn’t flat and the blocks keep falling off easily. And then came my little one who loves pulling the blocks down.

And now that the batting is empty, she is putting some of her little blocks on… I guess we have a little quilter in the making here. 🙂

I was so particular about the mushroom being upright… but then I had forgotten that some of the sashing pieces are vertically oriented! So now, I have sideways mushroom too… o well, lesson learned.

Sometimes we make silly mistakes, but that’s okay. Quilting is a skill and with more practice, we get better at it.

  1. LOVE the little quilter-in-training; and she’s so big already.

    My goodness, if you hadn’t mentioned it, I doubt anyone would ever know you made a mistake! So rather than using the word mistake, let’s call little glitches “deliberate idiosynchrasies” to ensure our quilts are one-of-a-kind masterpieces! ( ; -}
