A little update on my progress in quilting the Aviatrix Medallion Quilt in which I decide to do custom quilting with a home sewing machine.

Was it a good idea?

At this point, I am doubting my choice.

Custom quilting is fun, but I think if it is too large of a project, it can be draining to think about all the designs that should go into it.

I personally have learned a hard lesson when I thought I was going to quilt a different design for every center of my wedding ring quilt.

But I think I’m doing it again this time.

Less intense maybe.

Can we do custom quilting with a home sewing machine?

Custom quilting with a home sewing machine adds a little more challenge but is doable. I love it, but maybe for a much smaller project.

Surely it is possible and can be a lot of fun playing with the various designs.

It also adds more textures to the quilt and can highlight a certain block or add in a secondary design.

I have previously worked on a fun sampler quilt with custom quilting. Minimal but customize to the block and borders. You can see that quilt here>

The struggle: the weight or large area to custom quilt?

I didn’t struggle much with the weight of the machine since I got that sorted by quilting from the center first.

But, since it’s a large quilt, there’s a long way to finishing one round. Each round is a large area to cover. Hence a lot of repeats, and lots of quilting.

Dreamy Textures

The textures are not as obvious when laid flat on the bed since the quilt was made from printed fabrics.

But at a certain angle, I can see those pops of pebbles against the wavy echoes.

The spirals against the modern lines.

And I love that. I love the look of textured quilts.

They are not necessarily the best to sleep with, but they’re beautiful for display and supposedly fun to be creative with.

Well, at this stage I have another 3 more rounds to go. Large rounds.

I am probably going to take a break and quilt a more relaxed all-over quilting design on another quilt. But we’ll see.

What do you think? Is it worth custom quilting this Aviatrix quilt?

  1. Your quilting is absolutely amazing. I cant even imagine being able to do that type of stitches on my quilt. Your quilt is beautiful. You will really enjoy this quilt for many years to come. Keep up the good work. I love seeing what you do, even though I could never attempt that type of free motion quilting.

    • This is absolutely amazing! The textures! I am still amazed that this was quilted on a domestic sewing machine. ❤

  2. Your quilt is just beautiful! I admire you

Great quilting! I think you will find when the centre’s done the rest will go faster and easier!
I have done a queen size on my bernina……it has a narrow space. Lots of pins!
Keep going! You won’t regret anything!

Beautiful!!! I can understand your dilemma but it turned out perfectly!

  6. Beautiful quilting!!! A ton of work but worth the effort once you finish it. I couldn’t fight with large quilts any longer and broke down and bought a longarm machine. They take time to load but no more quilt sandwich or fighting and repositioning. Best decision ever!

Amira, that is simply exquisite. I’ve not done a big a quilt with custom work but I have on a lap-size quilt. It truly is time consuming, but it’s also an art and a labor of love.
I was a “late bloomer” into quilting and have been learning FMQ gradually. Someday, I hope I can achieve something as beautiful as yours.
Thank you for your endless inspiration.
