Cute project bags, plastic bags, boxes or baskets?

How do you keep work-in-progress (wips) organized?

I am not sure about you, but I am a multi-project-at-one-time kind of crafter. I love being able to jump from one project to another! It keeps me motivated and excites me. P

But the downside of that, is the amount of things to keep tidy. There’s just so many things that can just be everywhere around the sewing room if things are not well kept together.

Hence, one thing I do is to at least give all of my project a home. When I am not working with them, they have to go back home. All of the related pieces.

So there are a couple of ways you can keep work in progress at one place, and in this post I’ll share some of my favourite ways.

Pile of Quilt UFO and WIP

I finished a fun little Halloween quilt, the BOO crew a while back which was posted HERE with the links to the FREE pattern.

While I was tidying up the scraps leftover, I couldn’t help myself to try out the new paper pad I received from Fat Quarter Shop and use up my scraps right away. These fabrics were leftover from the quilt I made, it is the Stacy Iest Hsu Halloween Collection HERE  and the MODA grunge is Olivenite HERE

Using up leftover fabric

I find it easier to use up as much of the fabric and sort them right away before I put them away out of sight.

There’s a lot of benefit to using up your scraps as much as you can before they are piled on with the other scraps.

For one, you are already working with a good mix of fabric colours and prints. If you make a small scrappy project, it will be quick and easy plus it’ll match your quilt!

Another quilt done and bound. This is my first patriotic quilt. We don’t usually decorate our house with patriotic things, but some of us do. An even if they do, it is normally just outside their home. I’ll share some of those when August comes.

As Malaysian, we celebrate our Independence Day in the month of August. 31st of August will be the date we were free, in Malay we called this Merdeka. This year of 2022 will be our 65th Year of Independence.

Hence, I’d like to call this my Merdeka Quilt.

If you’re wondering why the colors are the same as the American flag (Americana colours) except for the yellows, you can read more about the colour choices at the beginning of making this quilt HERE>

America’s flag and the Malaysia flag is very much the same isn’t? Which is lucky for me because next time, I can also make the same stripes from lots of patterns available.

There are plenty of Americana Quilts Patterns out there that I can use too which makes it a lot more fun.

Patriotic Quilt

As with all the sampler quilts, this one was definitely an enjoyable one to make.

I get bored when piecing or cutting 100’s of the same size units, hence sampler quilt is my go-to quilts.

You can seee some of previous Sampler Quilts in my previous post below:

This time, I took the time to get some more Drone Photos just like when I did with Sewcialites Quilt! It is always exciting to get to do this and I ought to do it more often. Looking at quilts from far above is quite a view.

Yeah, we have reached to the end of the Halloween Quilt free quilt-a-long with one of my favorite Online Fabric stores as the host, the Fat Quarter Shop! This one comes with the free pattern, so you can save them if you didn’t sew along this time round.

If you did join along, let me know how did you go?

I love all the fun cute blocks we have to make this time round. FQS always have super cute patterns and their sew-a-long are a lot of fun to join in.

I started off with these fabrics from Stacy Iest Hsu Halloween Collection HERE and as for the background, I’m using a MODA grunge background named Olivenite HEREThe pattern calls for a purple background, but I thought I’ll do something a little different with a yucky mushy green. All of the fabric were sent by Fat Quarter Shop.

You can use your stash, use your own choice of fabrics like I did or you can also get a Boo Crew Quilt Kit.

You can read more about the previous blocks in the previous post:

And here’s my finished quilt!!!

Isn’t it cute???

I have to admit, since the SUMMER SALE, I have been doing few trips of quilting fabric haul. I just have very little resistance when it comes to fabric.

But it’s all worth it.

Why do I buy fabric?

Fabric makes me HAPPY in a lot of different phases of their lifetime with me.

I am HAPPY WHEN:

  • …I buy and shop for them – browsing for fabrics online or in store, is such a pleasure. Seeing all the colours, the possibilities. Such a fun thing to do for sure.
  • …I get them in the mail. Who doesn’t love happy mail?
  • …I have to keep them in place. I love organising fabrics, petting the fabric, and bundle of fabrics in a collection is so beautiful to look at.
  • …I look at them on display in my sewing space. They keep me inspired and gets me giddy to get things going in my sewing room so I can start making with them and just so I can buy more. Haha. The cycle goes on.
  • …I start working with them!
  • …they’re in my quilts or items I used. And I keep loving them until they are all worn out and used out full of love.

So isn’t that worth it?

LOL

I know I don’t have to justify my purchases, and we totally can buy fabrics or anything we love for as long as we are in our budget and means. And for as long as we are HAPPY. I like to say that I am also supporting small businesses and designers.

Fabric SALE and quilting fabric haul

Recently, I grabbed a few things from the SALE section HERE and some from the monthly BASICS sale for background fabrics.

I always buy BASIC backgrounds only when they’re on sale. This is one way to keep the cost down aside many more ways to budget and save when making a quilt. –> you can read about how to quilt on a budget HERE for more ideas.

So here’s my recent quilting fabric Haul and my plans for them.

It’s week 2 of the with BOO CREW, the Halloween Quilt free quilt-a-long with one of my favorite Online Fabric stores as the host, the Fat Quarter Shop! They always have super cute patterns and their sew-a-long are a lot of fun to join in.

How fun are these blocks?

Are you joining along?

Overwhelming fabric scraps. I thought this was such a fun topic to discuss. so here I am.

Do you love or hate working with fabric scraps? Do you sometimes get overwhelmed with your piles of fabric scraps?

Well, maybe the way you organized it in the first place was causing this issue. In this post, I’ll show how I sort fabrics scraps so that I get to use them easily.

I changed the way I work with scraps a while ago and it has been a game-changer in making sure I don’t get overwhelmed or hate using my scraps despite my very good intention to make use of them when I threw them into the scrap bins.

Throwing fabric scraps into the scrap basket

Honestly, I hate having to rummage through the messy pile of scraps and working with thin strips of fabrics that have frayed right after you try to pull them out from the scrap basket isn’t very fun to me.

Hence, I have stopped throwing them into the scrap bin and letting them sit there for way too long. I now work on sorting them right after the quilt tops are done. That way, I can work with the scraps right into the backing of my quilt or start sewing something small to match the quilt.

If you want to know more about how I do this, here’s a short video of me trying to explain the process.

How to sort fabric scraps from a quilt project

Watch it on YouTube HERE>

And make sure you subscribe to my YouTube Channel by clicking HERE to watch more upcoming videos all about scrappy projects.

So, what do you think of the method I used to sort and use these scraps? Anyhow, I hope you did enjoy that little video. Let me know if you are going to try it out too. I say do what works BEST FOR YOU. cause we’re all different. It’s great that we can try lots of different methods before we find one that matches the way we work.

What to make from these scraps? How about some scrappy pouch?

Here’s a video for the full tutorial on the quilt-as-you-go pouches. Check out the Youtube Channel and I would love to have you subscribed there too.

Week 1: Boo Crew Halloween Quilt A Long

This week we’re making the witch hat and broom block.

The two blocks were fun to make and mismatching fabrics was too much fun, I love that we get to fondle with beautiful fabrics as we make things. So grateful for designers as we can just enjoy making matchy things with their fabric line.

Here’s my finish blocks.

The broom is probably the longest block I have ever made!

And here is a little fun video I made as I piece this block together.

Are you joining along?

I have caught the Cross Stitch Bug. After watching many flosstubes, I am drawn to start this craft again.

As most crafters, I am drawn to many different crafts. I have cross-stitched before in my teenage years but now with the community of flosstube online, I feel like I’m connected again with the craft.

There is just so much joy in sharing the craft we love. It’s like crafting together yet being so far apart.
