Mini Quilts

Category

I haven’t been in a blog hop for quite some time already, and I thought it’d be fun to start joining again. Today is my turn for the WISH UPON A STAR Blog Hop, hosted by lovely Carol.

I love finding new blogs and connecting to other quilt bloggers around the world. Besides, I always think that blog hops is a great way for accountability to make sure I get something done!

I told you before, I kind of got addicted to swapping early this year and got myself into few swaps over at instagram. (I am @amira_littlemushroomcap by the way). This is probably the last swap for this year as I can’t commit myself and pose more due dates. I am writing thesis this year and really…that has been the main focus and energy this year and I must say I will be a little slow in the sewing department. In fact, for this swap, I had to tell my swap host who happen to be my partner too! that I will be late. I am not usually like that, but the travel, moving house, and studies had probably had something to do with that.

Though I’m busy, I will be sure not to be too quiet here or on instagram. I know, my creative outlet is probably one of the reasons that keep me going, keeping me positive and I intend to keep that while I write my thesis.

Anyway,……enough said, for the quilt, I decided to make the mini quilt with a classic block, the Ferris wheel. With Dresden style piecing and a little bit of appliqué, this mini quilt was born!

tula pink swap_ mini quilt package

I chose some of my favourite Tula Pink fabrics in rainbow of colours and also made a pouch with little hexies on it. I am glad the mini quilt has arrived safely in Emma (@joworimakes) and she had enjoyed the package. I love the joy of giving and maybe that is one of the reasons I joined swaps. Of course, receiving is also fun and a great surprise. Gotta love happy mail right?

Till then,

Quilty Hugs,

Hi!

Today I am going to share with you a wonderful swap package I receive from Lynda , my swap partner assigned for this Very Cherry Swap.  Tina (emilyannkloset) started the swap over on instagram with hashtag #verycherryswap.

I am amira_littlemushroomcap in Instagram by the way.

On a lovely Monday holiday, I receive this bundle of package full of cherry goodness! I love all of them, especially the lip balm (I am a sucker for lip balm) and the pouch! oh and the cute socks! Truely, I love all of them, can’t really pick a favourite. Look at that cute pom pom ric rac on the pillow case. Just perfect.

I am very thankful to have such a lovely partner, Lynda and the efforts she puts in all the things she made here. It was all very lovely indeed.

All goodies in one pic. Lucky Me

Cherry Swap received

So much of happy cherries!

The coasters are perfectly cherry too!

In return, this is the package I sent her. I love this swap as this swap embraces that we have each other as swap partners.

All packed in a cherry bag I had saved from my last trip cherry picking last year. Another fun thing about this swap is that I squeal everytime I see anything cherry, knowing that I could include it in the swap package. So this bag was definitely one squeal!

Here are the things in the package:

The main one was the mini quilt made from simple granny squares in Lori Holts’ fabric.

A pin cushion made with fussy cut 1/2 inch hexies and super cute cherry tag I found when I was back in Malaysia :

A sweet charm with a cherry on top! (printables available for free here). So easy to customize your gift with a certain theme with free printables!

Another customized with the same printable.

She loves lady bug, so I bought lady bug button and stuck them onto the printable too. Made a diary so cherry with the same printable.

I print and cut out cupcake wrappers with the free printable available here.

Deco with printables

Made simple stickers from them too.

Made the mini quilt label with a bit of embroidery. Can you spot some cherries in the free motion quilting I did on this quilt?

The very cherry pouch, embelished with a cute lady bug zipper I found at the recent quilt & craft show.

The open wide pouch has a cherry tag to cover the end of the zipper. Fussy cut.

Overall, I really enjoyed making all of them and have enjoyed the surprise I got from the lovely package Lynda sent me.

Hi!
I just wanted to share with you what I received from the Doll Quilt Swap 14.
I shared last time what I made. Here is what I received from my secret partner (no longer secret), Ginny!

The gifts were all very lovely. The quilt is the perfect quilt. I really wanted to join the economy block along hosted by Red Pepper Quilt, but just don’t have enough hands. I really love the colourful blocks Ginny made me.

I am soooo lucky to have this quilt. The additional gifts of stickers made me smile too. I love to use them in my scrapbook.
Well, till then – hope you all will have a great week ahead! I am halfway moving house, my sewing machine is already at the new place but still in a box. I have loads of tidying up and arranging to do!
XOXO

Hi!
DQS14 finished
I finished quilting this little quilt and ready to send it, but I would like to throw in more goodies for my Doll Quilt Swap 14 partner, so I will be getting it posted on the 24th hopefully with more goodies.
Stripping _DQS14
It was a fun quilt to make, though I got a bit stressed out with the seam points not matching. The little squares are 0.5″ finished and I guess it was totally out of my league to get those points to match! I wasn’t really happy at first, but I am pretty happy with the end result though.
Seams behind mini blocks
Scrappy and fun little tiny squares. More like confetti and I guess the mismatches brings out modern vibe to it too.
DQS14 ready to hang
I played with the free motion quilting too, especially in the negative blocks. I love Irish Chain. They are lovely to quilt with. I made an Irish Quilt (link here) when I started free motion quilting and it has definitely taught me a lot.
DQS14 label in front
Practice is the best teacher. I cannot stress that more – practice is the best way to improve free motion quilting. Give it a try. Try a mini quilt. They are fast to get done and they are definitely small enough to fit under those domestic sewing machines. The most important thing is have fun!!
Well, till then I am hoping my swap partner would love this quilt.
XOXO
NOTE : I no longer promote Craftsy/Bluprint as I used to due to the way the subscription is currently being carried out. I had the issue of cancelling my subscription when the company changed hand and I find that cancelling through calls is inconvenient. However, I do still stand behind these classes I promote and if you are subscribed, you can surely check these classes I recommend on the platform. If you are looking for another online platform to learn craft such as quilting, do check out CreativeBug. It is much cheaper in subscription (subscribe now 3 months for only $5). Thank you.

Hi!

I am just having fun and thought I’d link this recently made quilt to Ellison’s Modern Mini Quilt Challenge.

Feather Mini

The main point of this quilt was for me to use the technique I learn from Sarah Fielke’s craftsy class : needle turn appliqué! I never would have thought that needle-turn appliqué would be this easy until I tried her method!

I was aiming for minimalist design with some fussy cut feather off Martha Negley’s feather collection and freehand leaves shape. I got my bundle of Martha Negley’s from Westwood Acres.

The colour choices : not really me isn’t? Haha! I was trying to run a bit from my normal bright colours – I kind of regret a bit for the choice.

And as for the quilting, not so minimalist ha? I was aiming to practice feathers. Hence the feathers everywhere. It was totally fun, and definitely has boosted my confidence to do more of quilted feathers.

Well, I hope you will have fun hopping onto Ellison’s blog for more minis! I know I am.

Hi!
Finally I get to show you what I made for the Make it Right challenge! (update:this challenge has passed June 2013)
When I got the fabric, I just know that I don’t want to make it into a quilt. I just want to think a bit out of the box. Indeed I did – and when I want to submit it, I was thinking “hm… which category should it be in? Quilt? Apparel or Home Deco?” Finally I submit it into Home Deco.

I would really appreciate it if you could take a bit of time to like and repin on pinterest!
Click HERE to pinterest pin and click repin or like, because that is the vote they count for the challenge.
Anyway, I made this because the car seat is dull and of course I need to sew something to cheer it up!
And just because I made the backing as nice, I made it reversible too! The improved piecing is the back. Even the back pocket panel can be reversible!

You can refer to this post for the type of material and threads I used for this project.
Here are more photos: I quilt as happily as I can be. With very little planning really. I was just having fun most of the time! Glad it made it to the end!

All quilting was done on my . Bunnings (hardware store here in Australia) Glove works as good as machinger’s glove and cost only 1/3 of machinger! And the colour is blue!
The ruler story : I do not change foot while quilting this despite of many straight lines,  because I can’t be that patience! LOL.. I find this Fine LIne Quilter’s Ruler helpful to use on domestic machine, but sometimes foot can jump over it too! talk about dangerous (imagine the needle snapping on it)..you can find the ruler HERE > if you are interested.
Update: I love the ruler now that I can use it with my non-hopping foot!

Modern Placemat_with dessert
One of the weekend I spent a night finishing up one of the thing that has been on the UFO pile. One of them was the modern placemat. I didn’t quite like the top I made. However, once it was quilted, I think I am pretty happy with it.
Modern Placemat_a
The modern placemat is one of the project in Quilting Modern which I bought many months ago and this was a project that I started not long after I got the book.then it was piled on the UFO pile for quite sometimes…thankfully it got finished and can now be used.
