 Practice, practice, practice…

“Practice makes perfect”

That right there is a very common saying we’ve heard when it comes to just about any skills.  but….perfect is so overrated. Nothing is perfect right? But…practice do make it better.

Free motion quilting is one of those skills that really relies on practice.

In practicing free motion quilting, memory muscles become stronger as we practice, thus the movement of our hands become much smoother as we progress through.

In this post, I will be sharing with you a simple tutorial how to free motion quilt feathers and examples of feather quilting. While there are many ways to go about quilting feathers, the method I am going to teach in this post is one of the methods that I have found that works for me in order to create those organic looking feathers with practically boundless possibility.

NOTE : I no longer promote Craftsy/Bluprint as I used to due to the way the subscription is currently being carried out. I had the issue of cancelling my subscription when the company changed hand and I find that cancelling through calls is inconvenient. However, I do still stand behind these classes I promote and if you are subscribed, you can surely check these classes I recommend on the platform. If you are looking for another online platform to learn craft such as quilting, do check out CreativeBug. It is much cheaper in subscription (subscribe now 3 months for only $5). Thank you.

I am sharing with you today how I quilted block 5 – July Fourth. I had a lot of fun playing with another feather border with custom quilting and a rather quick to do allover quilting design.

If you are new here, this post is a part of my quilt-as-you-go my Sewcial Bee Sampler, a sewalong hosted by Sharon Holland and Maureen Cracknell. I plan to share along the process with some tips and tutorial.

As usual, I have two blocks made for two quilts, one  and one with allover quilting. Both would be a great practice if you are looking towards improving your free-motion skill. I am still practicing myself, especially with the custom quilting. I am learning as I go too, so let’s do this together!

I am sharing with you today how I free motion quilt block 4 – Crow’s Nest. So far, this is by far my favourite block! I made two version – with different fabric placement and they both look different and beautiful in their own way. Following the theme I have set up for these blocks, one of the block is quilted with custom free motion quilting and the other one with allover free motion quilting.

Hi!

A couple of days ago, I made these table runners.  Both the table runners were patched up in an evening. They were quick and simple. I finished the blue one that very day, but had stalled a while before quilting the red one. Now the red one is quilted, it is yet stalled to be binded. I will do it very soon, but let’s share them with all of you first.

I love the simplicity of cutting without measurements, simple strips and fun quilting. The inspiration came from the cover of the book ” Quilts made Modern by Weeks Ringle”

These both were gifts and really need to make me one myself. It is funny sometimes how fast you can sew for someone else, but yet find it so hard to find time to sew for yourself. I bet you if they were meant to be mine, they wouldn’t be done yet. There is a bigger reason to stall when they’re your own project. How about you. Do you feel the same? If not, how do you keep yourslef motivated to get that thing for yourself done and done?

Well, till next time – have a lovely Week ahead!

Hi!

I am back with this quilt and I can say it is finally finished! I put it aside for quite sometimes, after quilting it a quarter way. Then I moved house, and haven’t got the mood to start quilting it again in my smaller sewing space (I shall share with you soon) until last weekend. The quilt has a fold crease now, but I hope it goes away after washing.

Quilt Briar Rose Starry Diamond Equilateral Triangle swirly quilting

I had fun doing free-motion quilting on this quilt. Just swirls and bubbles (or pebbles). The stars were quilted with swirls evolving from the center.

The story behind this quilt? I received my briar rose bundle, decided to cut them as equilateral triangles, then I played around with those triangles. I ended up with this Stars which I group it in Diamond hence the name ~ blergh. Then I decided to add the border. I still have many triangles left, maybe I’ll make another quick baby quilt.

I love this line of fabrics, the colours made me smile. Made me wish I have a baby girl. I am going to keep this quilt or probably gift it to my sister.

Overall, I love the end result, but I wish I have more bed size quilts these days. So, my next projects are going to be more of bed quilts. I love the satisfying feeling of dressing up the bed with quilts I made. What do you do with so many small quilt? My sofa is full, and most of my smaller quilts are just folded, which made me feel sad.

Hope you have a fun holiday! Enjoy the beautiful Spring for those having Spring time, and enjoy Fall for those down-under!

Hi!
Today I would like to share with you a tutorial on how to make monogrammed couple pillows using the Tranpunto Quilting technique.
You will need as follows :
and 2 pieces of 18″ x18″ of muslin fabric for the backing of the front piece of the pillows.

Turn the pillow around through the unzip part and you are done! take a photo and share it on littlemushroomcap f

.
This is such a great way to practice that free motion skill! For ideas on which type of dense quilting you can do, try these tutorial links:

or you can always practice simple meandering too !

Hi!

I made a special wedding gift recently using a technique called “trapunto quilting”. I decided to make something that they can put on their bed, and thought a monogrammed pillow with their initials would be a great gift.

At first I was thinking to applique the initials but I feel like applique would speak too loud for these pillows. So, to make things more subtle, I decided to just hide the initials among the quilting. Besides, there is always a time when you need to practice that free motion skill. So making this pillow was definitely a great practice!

To make the lettering stand out even more, trapunto technique was used for the lettering in these pillows.

together...

..till jannah

At the bottom of their initials, I put ” Together.. till Jannah”. Jannah means Heaven in arabic.

What do you think? I sure hope the couple love them.

I will publish a tutorial soon for making these pillows. It is certainly a great chance to practice that free motion skill if you have been wanting to do so.

Till then,
Have a lovely week dear friends,

XOXO
