Creating a Functional and Beautiful Tote for Quilt Storage
As a quilter, I’ve accumulated a fair share of quilts and comforters that need proper storage. To keep them tidy and dust-free while adding a touch of creativity to the organization process, I decided to make a large storage tote. This project was a rewarding mix of functionality and creativity, with a quilted Dresden panel and a transparent vinyl feature. Here’s how I approached this unique project.
Designing the Tote
I wanted the tote to be as practical as it was beautiful. It needed to be large enough to hold multiple comforters or quilts, sturdy enough to carry the weight, and visually appealing to display my quilting skills.
- Quilted Dresden Panel: One side of the tote features a Dresden plate, a classic quilting design that I’ve always admired. It adds a lovely, traditional touch, and quilting it brought the whole panel to life.
- Transparent Vinyl Panel: The other side is made from transparent vinyl, allowing me to easily see what’s inside. This was a practical decision, but it also created a modern aesthetic.
Materials and Tools
For this project, I gathered:
- Fabric for the Dresden plate and backing. I used Honey and Lavender Collection by Deb Strain or on amazon HERE>
- Vinyl for the transparent panel.
- Stabiliser to add stability and quilting texture.
- A walking foot for sewing through thick layers.
