Here’s what’s currently on my quilt design wall. I am almost done with all the blocks for the quilt, just another row to go and I’m ready to piece the blocks together with sashing and border.
I started the quilt last summer together with a quilt along celebrating the Summer Memories Book by Susan Ache. You can check out #summermemoriesqal to join along or to enjoy all the other versions. The book is an eye-candy filled with great projects and is sure to inspire you to pick up some red and blue fabrics to get started. I knew I did! But what really caught my eye was the basket quilt.
On my Quilt Design Wall
I shared how I made this quilt wall in the previous post here. Having this design wall inspires me to keep going little by little on quilts that I am making. The design wall allows me to see the big picture of how the quilts are coming together and to decide the final layout.
Inspired by the colours used in the book and the basket quilt, The Summer Picnic Quilt as it is named in the book, I went ahead and picked up some lovely peaches and baby blues from my stash. They were from various collections and I had to actually busted out some of my fabric bundle and break them apart to get these together!
Totally was inspired by how Susan Ache built her stash. If you haven’t seen her stash of fabrics, you better check it out here. A dream! She is a big believer in breaking those beautiful one collection bundle apart and play with them! So, here I am channeling that.
These basket blocks are so much fun! They are a few variations of basket blocks just for this quilt.
I used triangle papers to make the triangles as there are a lot of half-square-triangle (HST) units for each block. However, I did not have the size, so I did have to trim some more. But, I’ll be sure to grab the right size from the wide selection HERE for the upcoming blocks. If you are new to triangle paper, you can try a freebie I have on the blog HERE.
You can watch my Reel below to watch snippets of me sewing these blocks together.

Quilting Tools and Notions I used:
- My trusted workhorse, Janome Horizon Memory Craft QCP8200
- I used Superior Thread Snow for piecing this quilt
- My favourite Ergonomic Rotary Cutter – this have saved my wrist a lot!
- Large cutting Mat
- Triangle on a roll papers
- Wool ironing Mat (I have no issues with the smell, but sometimes it can burn if the iron is way too hot and no steam)
- Oliso Pro Iron (I love this Iron, it lifts as you let go, saving the wrist from too much work and it gives a good heat and steam)
- Portable Design Board
- Quilter’s Clapper
- Wooden Seam Roller
- Diagonal Seam Tape – the tape I have on my machine to guide my 1/4″ seams and diagonal stitching. Game changing! Buy the original, it’s worth it and it will last for a very long time.
I am using scrappy background and I love how it adds in more dynamic to the look of the quilt. Besides, this is the time I can use up all of those smaller cuts of low volume fabrics. I only need to piece 4 more blocks together. I have all the basket units done. There were made from tiny pieces, but so worth it!
